Back in San José, we decided to go on another trip before actually exploring the city tomorrow, so we chose to visit the Irazú Volcano and the nearby city Cartago.
We had breakfast at our hotel before leaving for the Irazú Volcano, which is active to this day, but hadn’t erupted since 1965. From the visitor viewing platforms, we were able to see all the major craters and what has become of them and we were very lucky, as we arrived early enough to see everything not covered in fog.
After having seen the volcano, our next stop was the coffee farm Café Cristina and we got some insights into how coffee is harvested and made. The owners gave us a little tour and showed us some of their machinery and processes they use to produce their own coffee.
We stopped at another coffee farm to grab some lunch and then made our way to Cartago, which is famous for its beautiful Basílica de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles, a basilica built in the 17th century.
Through Cartago, we then made our way back to the hotel and are now looking forward to exploring Costa Rica’s capital, San José, tomorrow.
